CIFCFEN ANTI-CORRUPTION & INTEGRITY AWARDS

ABOUT THE AWARDS

THE CIFCFEN ANTI-CORRUPTION & INTEGRITY AWARDS (aka CIFCFEN TRANSPARENCY AWARDS) is an awards ceremony, that is geared towards encouraging honesty and fair dealings in public financial management (PFM), financial transactions and financial reporting, by recognizing and appreciating those who help to mitigate fraud, prevent corruption, stem illicit financial flows while also identifying with the courage and determination of many individuals, leaders of thought, captains of industry, parliamentarians, government agencies, development partners, private sector institutions who support corruption risk management.

We nominate winners of our awards via a fool proof leaderboard scoring system which captures public opinion and preferences. Consequently, having tracked this feedback (within our public finance demographics- financial players, finance experts, members of renown professional bodies, public servants etc.), for several months now, and having taken polls from more than 60,000 respondents from the 6 geo-political zones, we wish to say that the Chartered Institute of Certified Fraud Examiners of Nigeria (CIFCFEN) has found you worthy, to confer on you this esteemed award.

JUSTIFICATION FOR THE CIFCFEN AWARDS

Awards work as incentives to influence positive human behavior. In a bid to combat corruption, recognition of honesty or celebration of anti-corruption virtues of individuals or institutions is entirely overlooked and neglected. This oft ignored act, has proven to yield the much-needed motivation for potential role models and others engaged in promoting positive behavior, fighting to stem fraud and defiant conduct.

The CIFCFEN Anti-Corruption Awards, as proposed will serve to:

  1. Promote intrinsic motivation to counter corruption, whilst provoking compliance amongst others who would view this to be emotional and psychological gratification for doing the “right” thing.
  2. Motivate and reinforce the idea that what is done at the individual level matters and is duly appreciated.
  3. Provide genuine incentive which can motivate organizations and individuals to demonstrate their anti-corruption and integrity efforts proactively.

CONSEQUENT IMPACT OF THE AWARDS IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION.

As already highlighted, awards work as incentives via a number of channels that have been shown to influence human behavior. Awards can serve as a motivation as they

  1. Foster an increased sense of self-confidence in the recipients, regardless of monetary or socio-economic class.
  2. Generate social prestige and recognition amongst peers
  • Promote a healthy competitive environment, which many people enjoy irrespective of the outcome

In addition to serving as incentives, awards also work ex post – in that, they help establish role models, distribute information about successful and desirable behavior and engender a sense of patriotism in the populace. For this reason, they also have the potential to serve as tools for anti-corruption.

In climes where the rule of law is weak and impunity is constantly on the increase (like Nigeria), relying on sanctions alone has proven to be ineffective in fighting corruption, hence some sort of reward/ recognition system is needed and needs to be institutionalized. It is for this reason that the Anti-Corruption & Transparency Awards is being proposed at this moment.
